Seven Long-Distance Driving Tips for Summer Road Trips

#1 Have a Plan in Place

Before taking a long drive, it’s a good idea to have some of your plans mapped out. This will help make the trip more enjoyable and less stressful.

For long-distance road trips, it’s a good idea to use the navigation to ensure you don’t get lost. Whether you use navigation apps or a paper map, don’t guess where you need to be. If you are using a paper map, be sure you have someone navigating for you so you, because looking at a paper map while driving would be considered distracted driving.

#2 Make Sure You’re Rested

It’s never a good idea to drive while tired so ensure you get enough sleep the night before you leave. If the road trip will be over multiple days, make sure you are well rested each time you drive.

#3 Pack Snacks

Snacks are an essential part of road trips, especially when travelling with small children. Have a variety of snacks on hand and make sure water is included.

#4 Take Breaks

If getting to your destination is going to take several hours or days, make sure to take breaks. You can stop at little towns along the way, enjoy a picnic, or even spend a night in a hotel.

#5 Have Your Camera Ready

It’s always fun to take pictures of your trip so you can look back at the memories you made.

#6 Secure Your Items

If you plan on packing bikes and/or using a roof rack, make sure all items are properly secured to ensure the safety of other drivers and to protect your belongings from being damaged.

#7 Prepare Your Car

Last but certainly not least, it’s crucial that you ensure your car is prepared before you leave for the road trip. Important things to check include fluid levels, tire tread, tire pressure, wipers, gas levels, and lights. You should also pack your car with an emergency car kit to ensure you’re prepared for any scenario.
