Simple Ways to Make the Holidays More Green, Youngs Insurance, Ontario

As one of our 110 Acts of Kindness, we implemented a recycling program in our offices. That’s why we felt it was important to help spread some awareness as to how to be greener this holiday season.

During the holidays it can be difficult to keep eco-friendly practices in mind, especially if we are rushing around. Along with becoming recycling fanatics, we have compiled simple ways you can make the holidays greener this year.

Three Holiday Staples and How to Make them Green

#1 Gifts

Be mindful of what you gift and how you gift it! Choose sustainable items to give as that encourages green habits. You can even gift experiences, giving back, donations, or other non-tangible items such as a tree or star in their name.

Once you have selected the gifts, choose the most sustainable wrapping options. Remember, any wrapping paper with designs on them contain a wax film that doesn’t allow them to be included in your recycling. If you already have wrapping paper at home, use it up before buying anything new. You may also want to limit how many gifts you buy online as there is a great deal of excess waste that comes with online shopping.

#2 Lighting

When it comes to selecting holiday lighting, be sure to choose more eco-friendly options, such a LED lights – they consume significantly less energy. This will be more efficient and help you keep your home green this holiday season. Not only is this great for the environment but for your energy bill too.

#3 Decorations

Decorations can help create a cheerful and happy holiday atmosphere, but often decorations are made of harmful plastics and other non-recyclable materials. The simple solution is to get creative and use what you already have instead of purchasing more decorations each year. And of course, try to get into the habit of recycling and repurpose or recycle any decorations you will no longer be using.

Practicing these green habits will make for an eco-friendlier holiday season. We have challenged ourselves to become greener by recycling, and we encourage you to do the same!
