Potentially all household appliances can be dangerous and cause fires that could damage your home (even the appliances we least expect). Protect your family and home by learning more about them below.

Four Surprisingly Dangerous Household Appliances, Youngs Insurance, Ontario

In Ontario, 73% of structure loss fires occurred in residential occupancies from 2010-2019. Of these losses due to fire, 5% were caused by appliances, and 4% were caused by electrical/mechanical dysfunction.

While the percentages might seem low, it’s shocking to think that everyday household appliances can be dangerous. We’ve shared common appliances you might not accept that could potentially cause a fire.

Four Unexpectedly Dangerous Household Appliances

#1 Refrigerator |

Like most household appliances, refrigerators can pose a fire hazard if not properly maintained. A fire can occur when water pools in the unit and seeps into the electrical system. Also, a fire can occur from a short-circuited switch.

#2 Clothes Dryer |

Dryer fires in the home are more common than you think; according to CBC online, Toronto reports an average of 39 dryer fires annually. There are many causes of a dryer fire; if lint gets close to thermostats, motors, or heating elements, a fire can result. For more information, read how to prevent a dryer fire.

#3 Personal Electronics |

The batteries that power most of our handheld devices or personal electronics can catch fire if they have been previously damaged. It’s important to make sure your battery is in good condition, avoid aftermarket batteries and chargers, and store batteries properly. Panasonic shares helpful tips and information on this here.

#4 Dishwasher |

Water and electricity, what can go wrong? Of all the appliances that are a hazard, people never think of the dishwasher. If water gets into the electrical components or the element overheats, a serious fire could occur.

It’s not a coincidence all the hazards above involve fire; this is a very real risk and should be taken seriously. Be sure to have the following:
  • Appropriate fire extinguishers
  • Emergency safety plan
  • Smoke detectors and alarms
  • Appliances that are in good working order
