What Are Your Brakes Trying to Tell You? SnapQuote Insurance

Suspect brake problems? Don’t mess with your safety (or anyone else’s). If you hear, feel, and/or see something weird in your car, get it checked out A.S.A.P. To help we’ve outlined some of the common indications that your brakes need help!

If you hear…

Are your brakes screeching, grinding, or banging when you push on the brakes? Screeching sounds could mean your brake pads need to be replaced. If they start making a loud grinding sound, it’s even more dramatic as your brake pads and two pieces of metal could be rubbing together, which damages your rotors.

If you feel...

Is your car pulling to one side when you brake? This could be caused by the brake linings wearing unevenly or by foreign matter in the brake fluid. You might need to have your brakes adjusted or have the fluid drained and replaced.

Have you noticed a vibration in your brake pedal, even when anti-lock brakes are not engaged? This can be caused by warped rotors. When your rotors are warped, the brakes pads are not able to grab the surface evenly (endangering your safety).

Do you find that your brakes are less responsive and the pedal “sinks” toward the floor? You could have an air leak in the brake hose or a brake fluid leak. Check for a small puddle of fluid when the car is parked.

If you see...

Take a look at the wheel’s spokes and check out the pad that’s pressed against the metal rotor. If you see less than ¼ inch of the pad, you should contact a mechanic.

Don't mess with your brakes, get 'em checked out immediately when you suspect there might be an issue.
