The History of Youngs Insurance

The history of Youngs Insurance Brokers is an inspiring story of a family committed to serving their customers.

R.C. Young - Insurance services by bicylcle, 1910

On May 10, 1910, with $350 borrowed from his father, Robert Carl Young launched his first business venture – R.C. Young Insurance – from a modest office located in the “Logan Block” near the corner of Queen Street and Erie Avenue in Niagara Falls.

In those days the initial policies sold by Robert Young, were delivered the same way he used to make his sales calls – by bicycle.

While R.C. Young’s Insurance grew and developed as an enterprise it also somehow inadvertently became a staple for the insurance industry in Niagara.

In 1936 Robert’s son Carl would join the firm and the company would begin an unparalleled period of growth. It was on Carl’s watch and with his father’s guidance that Young’s Insurance continued its pattern of growth and development which eventually compelled the organization to seek more space and recruit additional personnel in order to sustain its considerable progress.

By 1954 Carl had spent 25 years in an intimate apprenticeship-like relationship with his father.  He was more than prepared to succeed his father in the business when the company celebrated its 50th Anniversary and Carl’s retirement.

It was always thought that Carl’s son Roger would follow suit and succeed Carl and his grandfather Robert. However, in 1960 instead of assuming a role in the insurance business at Youngs, Roger selected a career in law.

Faced with the unexpected interruption, Carl then provided an opportunity for devoted employees of the company to own and evolve it. The new ownership of the company adopted broad scale expansion that would diminish the company’s resources. It is because of the enthusiasm of a surprisingly resourceful Sales Associate and his ambitious visions that the company’s Welland branch and Youngs name prevailed and continues to be one of the leading brokerages operating in our community today.
