Scientists in School
Submission Story |
Scientists in School is a leading science education charity that provides fun, hands-on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) workshops to Kindergarten to Grade 8 students in Ontario and Alberta. In Niagara Region last year, over 10,000 young scientists in 400 workshop across 68 schools participated in the program. Programming is offered in schools in most of the communities where Youngs Insurance offices are located.
I have attended one of their workshops and have personally seen how children’s curiosity in science is sparked, and how even the most reluctant learners are engaged. Children are transformed into scientists immersed in inquiry; peering into microscopes, exploring insect adaptations, experimenting with levers, and more. Squeals of glee, laughter, and exclamations of ‘oh’, ‘wow’, ‘I get it!’, and ‘I’m so smart’ are common to hear in a Scientists in School workshop.
As there is no denying that the future of the economy and the jobs of tomorrow will be in STEM, Scientists in School ensures that children and youth are given the chance to love science, acquire the skills and knowledge to navigate in an ever-changing future, and the opportunity to realize their full potential.
“The students are still talking about the things they learned! This learning has filtered down to our classroom discussions and they are wanting to continue learning more. It was a great experience...” - Kindergarten Teacher, District School Board of Niagara after Simply Marvelous Machines workshop
“The kids are engaged and having a great time. They finish the day with a great understanding of the topics covered because they were able to participate and actually see, feel, and do!" - Grade 6 Teacher, District School Board of Niagara after Air & Flight workshop
