What To Expect From Harley-Davidson’s Electric Motorcycle

Posted Jul 10th, 2017 in Motorcycling Tips

Harley-Davidson has big plans for the future! In fact, they will be introducing 100 new motorcycles within the next 10 years! One of the hundred is an electric motorcycle and we can’t help but wonder what to expect.

In 2014, Harley-Davidson introduced its LiveWire prototype and got our attention. As progress continues on the production of Harley-Davidson's first electric motorcycle, we are excited to advise you on what you can expect!

What Will It Look Like?

Harley-Davidson has shown us their Livewire concept model, but it’s likely that the electric motorcycle will look different. Since the range would need to be at least double that of the LiveWire model, the battery would need to be bigger. A bigger battery would need more space. In his autoblog, John Beltz Snyder, envisions a  large, heavy battery sitting at the bottom of the frame and a small motor located close to, or in, the swingarm swivel. The electric motorcycle will offer a new look, but shouldn’t stray too far from Harley-Davidson’s important heritage.

What Will It Sound Like?

Harley-Davidson’s gas-powered motorcycles have a unique sound, and they promise the same for the electric bikes. Bill Davidson, the great-grandson of Harley-Davidson’s founder William Davidson, describes the motorcycle as sounding like a “jet fighter”. Engineers hope the sound will set the bike apart from its competitors.

Why Now?

The environmental-awareness of an electric motorcycle is appealing, but Matt Levatich, President, and CEO of Harley-Davidson Inc., believes the bike’s performance will attract riders. We don’t know the exact date for the release of the bike, but the company promises we will see it by 2021.
