Motorcycle riders deserve to feel safe while riding. That’s why it’s important that all of us driving traditional four-wheeled vehicles keep them in mind and follow these straightforward safety road rules.

Four Road Rules For Keeping Motorcycle Riders Safe

If you’re planning a summer road trip, make sure you check out our safety tips for driving with motorcycles.

#1 | Check your blind spots constantly

Motorcycles are much smaller than your car and can be difficult to see. In addition, even though they are loud it can be hard to tell where they are coming from. This is why it’s important to not only check your mirror but also check your blind spots often.

#2 | Pay attention at intersections

A majority of accidents involving motorcycles happen at intersections. When approaching an intersection be sure to thoroughly look both ways, and if required come to a full stop before proceeding.

#3 | Avoid aggressive passes

If you need to pass a motorcycle it’s important to be careful, especially at high speeds. The gust of wind-generated from passing can make the rider unstable. Be sure to signal so the bike rider can prepare accordingly. Also, it’s imperative to ensure you do not move back into the lane without notice.

#4 | Consider the vehicle

Motorcycles do not drive like your car; they react much differently and what may seem like something safe and simple to you isn’t safe for them. For example, slamming on your breaks and hitting a pothole are two examples of things that wouldn't put you in danger while driving a vehicle, however, both of those things can be deadly for a motorcycle rider. So remember, motorcycles will not be able to respond to things the same way you can in your car.
